The flakes are often noticeable if they fall from your scalp on to your shoulders.
Your scalp may also feel dry and itchy.
Dandruff isn’t contagious or harmful, but it can be unpleasant and difficult to get rid of.
However, there are some natural remedies that can help you to solve this issue.
- Olive oil. According to ‘‘WebMD’’, olive oil is a home remedy that shows effectiveness in fighting dandruff. ‘‘Livestrong.com’’ recommends treating the scalp with warm olive oil. Wet your hair first and apply the oil directly to the scalp. Once the scalp is thoroughly covered, cover your head with a shower cap and let the oil soak for 30 minutes. Shampoo and condition your hair afterward.
- Baking soda. Another proven home treatment according to ‘‘WebMD’’ is baking soda. The simplest way to use it is to thoroughly wet your hair and then massage baking soda directly into the scalp several times a week. ‘‘Home Remedies For All’’ says that you can also combine equal parts baking soda and olive oil to create a thick paste for a moisturizing dandruff treatment. Apply the paste and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes before washing out.
- Tea tree oil. Tea tree oil can be combined with baking soda to get a great dandruff treatment. ‘‘Home Remedies For All’’ says to combine 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 5 to 6 drops of tea tree oil and 50 ml of water. Leave it on your scalp for 15 to 20 minutes; then wash out.
- Coconut oil. Whether coconut oil actually cures dandruff or not is uncertain, but it is definitely antibacterial and a hydrator. Dr. Axe recommends making your own shampoo using tea tree oil, baking soda and coconut oil. Combine 1 1/2 cups coconut milk, 1/2 cup castile liquid soap, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 teaspoon unrefined coconut oil, 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 20 drops rosemary oil, 15 drops tea tree oil and 1 teaspoon ground fenugreek seeds. Mix it all thoroughly and put in a bottle.
- Lemon juice. Lemon juice is making a real buzz in the home remedy world for balancing the body’s pH. One of the things it’s supposed to do is help with dandruff. Whether it actually works or not, you will have to be the judge. ‘‘B4tea’’ offers a whole list of possible ways you can use lemon juice on your scalp to try and combat dandruff. One you can try calls for 4 drops of honey, 2 spoons of curd and the juice from one lemon. Mix it together and rub it into your scalp. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then shampoo your hair like normal.
Waging war on dandruff doesn’t have to be expensive or frustrating. By using some simple ingredients from your home, you might be able to effectively rid yourself of your flaky, white nemesis once and for all.
